This tiny piece comes from the Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach by J. S. Bach (1685 – 1750). Though in some editions attributed to his son, Johann Christian, its provenance is unclear.
The 'Little Notebook' is a collection of small-scale vocal and keyboard works that Bach compiled for his second wife, who was a professional singer. The book was gradually expanded over the years, and became almost a musical family photo album of pieces used for the keyboard tuition of the children, and of Anna herself; first compositions by various soon-to-be-famous sons; and pieces by musical colleagues and acquaintances.
This piece is short and perfectly manageable for younger players, though it does need a degree of skill in the execution of the ornamentation. If omitted, some of the sense of the phrasing is lost.
Bach purists will, I hope, excuse the addition of the odd extra bit of texture to flesh out the sound. Arranger's prerogative...
