Claudin de Sermisy Tant que vivray (for Wind Quintet)

A simple but beautiful piece from the Renaissance...

Claudin de Sermisy (c.1490 – 1562) was a French composer of the Renaissance. He was best known for his chansons, of which this piece is an example. Even in his own day, Claudin de Sermisy's works were transcribed for instruments, so I hope he won't mind if the tradition is continued today.

This piece can help encourage the production of a good, solid ensemble sound. The music is simple enough to enable the players to focus on precision of rhythm, accuracy of tuning, and the skill of listening to each other as they play. The last, slightly faster section, provides a contrast in texture; most of the instruments pass the melody back and forth in a dialogue. Only the poor old bassoon is left out of this little game – someone has to keep the bass line going, after all.

Instrumentation:

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Bassoon

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Bassoon
